BASF Kids’ Lab will be held from November 9 to 13, 2011 at 1Utama Shopping Centre, Petaling Jaya. In conjunction with the International Year of Chemistry 2011, the program will be held on a larger scale to give more kids the opportunity to participate and enhance their knowledge and interest in chemistry. BASF is a global sponsor of the International Year of Chemistry 2011.
Kids will participate in four exciting hands-on educational experiments themed around water and its important role in our lives. They will learn how a chemical compound called superabsorbent polymer, can absorb liquid up to 1,000 times its own weight, and how it can be applied in hygiene products such as diapers. The kids will also see how activated charcoal works as a medium for removal of organic contaminants in wastewater purification and learn about the importance of emulsifiers in emulsion making process to make body lotion. The experiments will also show how chromatography is used to detect illegal substances, identify additives and used for quality control checks in medicine, cosmetics and many others applications. There will also be a games station with chemistry themed games and information stations and activities for parents and the general public.
